Study of α-Synuclein’s Post-Translational Modifications by Mass Spectrometry
Ezequiel Giménez
Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry
Although diverse α-Synuclein´s Post Translational Modifications (aSyn´s PTMs) have been identified, a precise correlation with the development of Parkinson Disease (PD) has not yet been established. We propose that different PTMs (such as oxidation and nitration) could be responsible for the molecular events that leads to aSyn´s gain of toxic function. In this context, our main aim in this project is to identify potential toxic aSyn´s PTMs employing state-of-the-arts Mass Spectrometry methods. This will allow us to establish models to study aSyn´s PTMs in complex samples as a way to understand the initial events that trigger the progression of PD.
