Estimating soil nitrous oxide emissions from agricultural and natural ecosystems in Argentina

Tomás Della Chiesa

Colorado State University

Nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions are one of the major greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, and the main ozone-depleting single substance in the stratosphere. The main source of N2O from terrestrial ecosystems are agricultural soils. However, we have scarce estimations of N2O emissions and we know little relating the controlling factors. During my Ph.D. in the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina, I have been measuring N2O emissions from croplands and the natural ecosystem behind in the main agricultural region of Argentina. The objective of this proposal is to integrate these measures in a simulation model developed in the Colorado State University to produce spatially explicit estimations of N2O emissions from Argentinean ecosystems. The information generated during my visit will be used by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of Argentina who design the policies that promote management systems designed to reduce or minimize the negative impact of current agricultural systems on the environment.
