The competition was held as part of the 2008 edition of the Support for Rural Schools Program. The prize-winning students were from two rural schools, the first from San Vicente, province of Misiones and the second from Casbas, province of Buenos Aires. They visited the City of Buenos Aires and took part in meetings with journalists and editors from the daily newspaper La Nación and the school magazine InterCole, as well as enjoying other recreational activities.
The directors of the Bunge y Born Foundation and the Perez Companc Foundation accompanied the thirty-five children and their teachers on visits to some of Buenos Aires’ most important sightseeing spots. These included the Plaza de Mayo, the historic Cabildo parliament building, General San Martín’s mausoleum in the Metropolitan Cathedral, the Sarmiento Frigate Museum and the districts of San Telmo and Recoleta, all in the company of a well-versed guide to help them make the most of their visit. The group also visited the Temaiken wildlife biopark and the Planetarium, went to the movies and enjoyed a meal at MacDonald’s.
However, the icing on the cake was their visit to the newsrooms of the daily newspaper La Nación and the children’s school magazine InterCole. The students were able to see first-hand how a newspaper is put together, how the journalists work and understand the different stages an edition goes through right up until it reaches the reader. At the InterCole newsroom they participated in a series of sessions held by the cartoonists of the magazine, learning about design and copywriting.
As the visit came to an end, each student received a schoolbag with essentials for the new school year as well as the tools needed to take part in the upcoming competition to be launched by the Program for its 750 beneficiary schools later on this year. |
