History
Since it was created in 1964, the Bunge y Born Foundation has dedicated itself to fostering the development of knowledge, specifically through the promotion of creative intellectual work in the area of academic research. It has, from its beginnings, awarded a prize to scientific investigation on an annual basis and also supports research groups by awarding scholarships and awards on a competitive basis.
The Bunge y Born Foundation Prize aims to encourage creative intellectual work as well support Argentina’s social, economic and scientific development. It awards a sum of money, a Diploma and a Gold Medal on an annual basis to individuals specialized in a number of different fields, some of which have been more recent additions in tune with the latest advances in science.
The Prize for Young Scientists was first presented in 2000 to encourage the work of the new generations of researchers. It is awarded to outstanding young scientists from the same fields as the Bunge y Born Foundation Prizes, and also involves the award of a sum of money, a Diploma and, in this case, a Silver Medal.
On August 6, 1963, the then president of Bunge y Born, Mr. Jorge Born (the grandfather of the current president of the Foundation) announced the setting-up of the Bunge y Born Foundation Prize and the institution of the same name at a press conference.
Since then, numerous outstanding scientists, many of international repute, have been honored with an award from the Foundation.
The selection process includes a number of stages: first, the Bunge y Born Foundation puts together a Jury Panel made up of highly-qualified researchers from the specific discipline which is to receive the award. They in turn have the responsibility of assembling a Special Committee to advise them during the selection process. The Special Advisory Committee, also made up of specialists from the area, researches the fields of the sciences in Argentina to identify possible candidates for shortlists competing in each of the two categories. The candidates are evaluated on the basis of the excellence of their work, their contribution to teaching, leadership qualities and innovation.
The Committee then presents the Jury Panel with a shortlist of those who achieved the highest qualifications. Finally, the Jury Panel selects the winners of the Bunge y Born Foundation Prize and the Young Scientists Prize.
